So, the announcement came today that Magee would be replacing Morie as Lawrence or the time being. Atsuki Renka is taking over Magee's role as Aloys.

Sadly, they don't post changes to the revue half that Mories absence necessitated. Here's what I've found online about todays show, though. I'm going to try doing toujitsuken this weekend so I can confirm then.

Ebony (Atuski Renka's role) - Sawaki Rizu. She had the role in the shinko

Heat on Beat -
Magee took over Morie's parts in the prologue as well as her part with Ahi in Besame Mucho during the chuuzume. I'm kinda interested to see how their voices mesh X_X
In the parade, only Masaki and Mirio came down in the center.

It seems like Magee did well in the role. Her take on the character is supposedly different than Morie's, but it's understandable considering they're styles are so different.

I worry about her running herself into the ground to catch up, though X_X She's been going in so early and leaving so late that we aren't even doing iridemachi

Yes, you've heard it from the rest of your friends lists already. Tsukigumi is I love Masaki. Really, I do. Do I think she's ready for nibante (ie Chauvelin)? I'm not so sure about that yet :/ No offense intended! I just wouldn't want to throw her to the sharks too early!

Here's food for thought: If they don't transfer someone in (like the Kimu rumor that's been circulating for a while now)... guest role/yakugawari, perhaps?

Barring that... hmmm... Micchan!Chauvelin? We could steal her back and it would lend itself toward the vocal base that they've been building with Tsuki lately

    <lj:music>Muse - Uprising</lj:music>

*GASP!!!* A proper post from Manda! Can it be?!

I'm going to TRY to come out of hiding. I'm not sure that going IN to hiding was really a conscious choice or not in the first place. Part of it is something I do periodically in a completely non-fandom related way. Part of it is that I haven't had the ability to concentrate on doing any one thing long enough lately to finish it - ie, even writing an LJ post.
In either case, I intend upon writing more frequently from now on, if I can make myself.

I saw BeruBara / Exciter yesterday, as well as attended Mame-chan's (Hinata San) ochakai. This was my first live show in practically two months, believe it or not. Buying a $1000 plane ticket home for the holidays DOES have the annoying tendency to take a chunk out of your kangeki budget. I attended Tomu's ochakai for Gyakuten Saiban 2 last month, but wasn't able to see it.

So.... BeruBara. BeruBara, BeruBara, BeruBara. What can I say about it? I think Tegan summed it up pretty well yesterday:

The revue (Exciter) was worth the entire 2000 yen for touji B seki.

BeruBara was full of fail. Epic fail. BeruBara is this tricky beast; You go in expecting certain things in regards to a BeruBara show. Yet, at the same time, you don't really expect groundbreaking, earth-shattering theatre. You expect small things like the ridiculous 10 or 15 minute prologue and a ludicrous amount of melodrama. You expect overacting

BeruBara is okay in moderation and when you know what to expect. There's this guilt in watching it where you realize it's pretty damned ridiculous and you want to roll your eyes at the melodrama, but it's OKAY to secretly be liking something so ridiculous.

In this Andre Gaiden.... you just feel.. unsatisfied. It feels wrong. There's no melodrama. Everyone looks tired (wao_wao, I rode home on the train with one of my club members last night and she said the exact thing about them looking tired too). They've spliced down the top musumeyaku's role to practically nothing, all while sticking her in a rather hideous dress (Ayane-chan fans, may your fears be allayed in that she has some AMAZING dresses in the revue half, including a red slitted number with full-leg visibility). There's ridiculous inconsistencies. Sou's Alain coming across rather... stoned. Fersen's dialog, when faced with Oscar's feelings. Wow... HARSH.

And they inserted the Andre x Oscar confession scene.... only to mutilate it. I wonder how that conversation went in the universe of Ueda-sensei's head: "I have the AMAZING idea! Let's stick in the confession scene! But let's move it outside to the garden! And then COMPLETELY CHANGE THE DIALOG where we'll say that OSCAR KNEW ALL ALONG"

Frustration.

Bringing this gaiden back to the Daigekijou gave them the opportunity to rework it, to improve upon what were supposedly obvious problems with it the first time around. Instead.... it's....I don't know even how to put the disappointment into words. While speaking with another Japanese fan, the only way she could describe it was "ダメ"

Okay, my attention and concentration is waning quickly so I'll have to write about Exciter! later. Suffice it to say, it's the only part of the show WORTH the full price of admission.

The shonichi digest aired today. Yuu-san's cute dorky kid voice is adorable!

I must say that a certain princess will assuredly approve of a certain angel's chuuzume costume: sinfully red and slinky with a slit showing off her leg

Yasumi for Magee today, so I stayed in, baked cookies and cleaned a bit.
Let's see.

I'm in Tokyo right now. I'm dead tired and running on about an hour and a half to two hours of sleep. I made it to the theater RIGHT at 10:30 when the ticket pickup was beginning. I had stashed my suitcase in a locker in Tokyo Station as I didn't have time to drag it around or hunt down a locker in Hibiya.

Today was kumisouken and I had a great time, seeing all of the Tokyo ladies again. I love them and they all want to talk to me. I want to talk to them, too, but I keep doing my freeze-up thing. Deer in headlights, especially when several of them start trying to talk to me at once.

One of the Tokyo ladies - who sat at our table at the Me and My Girl ochakai more than a year ago - kept having me speak Japanese to people because she wanted everyone to hear ho much better I've gotten ^^; I feel like I make no progress, but then again when I compare myself to where I was a year ago, there's a big difference. Then, I had to concentrate VERY hard to understand. Now I'm at the point where I don't even try to translate in my head to understand

The one thing I wanted to know is how people who have done demachi during the summer have never mentioned the lovely smell from the sewer >_< Unless this was just a one-time thing. This was also the first time I've crouched on the Chanter side of the street (Asako's club was on the theater side until kaisan). When I came for however many days for Yume / Apasionado in January, we were on the theater side the entire time.

Magee was having slight mustache issues, but not bad, and only in the finale. During demachi standby, I tried to relay the story in half Japanese and half English to the others of how her mustache kept coming loose during "Madame Wolf's collection" once in the Mura and how her "Freeze Pose" wound up being one hand on Yuria's ass and the other against her mustache.

Lets see. Atsuki Renka had more people at de than I expected. I'm not sure that she even has people in Takarazuka for her. Masaki just looked soooo cool. But the kakkoii dress award goes to Morie <3 <3 She stood and talked to her club for a few minutes and we found out why she looked so おしゃれ. She was going straight to record her episode of Cafe Break! (It airs in Tokyo on August 3rd).

In the end, it wound up being us and Kacha's club who were last. Kacha and Magee came out pretty much at the same time. Kacha had on tan khakis (and a baseball cap).... and it looked like flat converses and the pants look like they're the length to normally be worn with heels... so her poor pants were getting all worn and all from being stepped on

Tomorrow is:
Magee's Birthday
Kaisouken
Magee ochakai

I know there's more I want to say but I'm sitting in Sakura's cafe and my eyes keep drifting shut on me.

Oh, and again, please give me your suggestions on what to do with my time here in Tokyo! I'm here until Thursday and will likely do iride the whole time, but tomorrow is the last time I see the show! (And i'm honestly getting Elisabeth'ed out). Even touristy things!

(Saturday 7/18 - Thursday 7/23)

I'll be taking a shinkansen early morning this Saturday. I'll be going to the 11am show of Elisabeth (kumisouken). Afterwards, I'll be heading off to check in to Sakura, where I'll be staying for the duration.

Sunday the 19th will be busy ^^; Magee's birthday, so special irimachi. Seeing the 3:30 show (kaisouken). After the show, we'll be rushing to the ochakai (doors open at 6:30, starts at 7:30) at Grand Arc Hanzomon.

Those are the only two shows I actually have tickets for. Monday is a holiday, so yasumi is Tuesday. If I feel like seeing the show yet again, I might try doing toujitsuken. (I've never done it in Tokyo before).

Otherwise, my only plans are for iridemachi and...I'm thinking I might do some of the touristy Tokyo things that I somehow never seem to do during my other trips. ^^; One-track fangirl mind.

Any suggestions on how I can fill my time in Tokyo and the surrounding area?
Eliiiiiiiisabeth

First impression of this production: Sometimes there's a such thing as TOO MUCH.... even in Takarazuka.

(I actually fell asleep last night typing most of this up ^^; I woke up at 4am to a loooooooong string of "P"s where my fingers were pressing in my slumber.)

Asako!Death
It's so hard to tell what I think so far. I'm actually not quite sure what I think of her Death. Very PURPLE wardrobe. Except when she's playing the rogue Christmas elf in green velvet during "Saigo no Dance". (seriously, you stick her next to Kacha in the red dress and that's what it looks like). I think almost every other outfit has purple of some sort or another in it.

Her take on Death isn't as.. extreme... as others. She's not the Mizu's "abusive boyfriend" deah, or Saeko's effeminite death. She's not Osa's very human death or Zunko's cold and angry/fierce death. Her death is....well.... かっこいい... very cool. Almost flippantly cool. She's not in the least the weakest Der Tod, nor do I think she's the strongest. She carries herself with an air that says "I'm Death. I'm cool. Love me. Don't love me. Whatever, I'm still too damned cool for this and for you"

Her singing is good, and, well, typically Asako. She sounded good paired with whoever. (Actually, her and Mirio!Rudolf harmonized VERY well.) The finale songs are very... her..... ^^;

Kacha
I was rather impressed with her. I didn't get that feeling of "this is an otokoyaku doing an onnayaku role" from her. Kacha's voice is rather impressive and -this is my own personal opinion - her version of "Watashi dake ni" was one of the better that I heard. Kacha's voice is very well suited to Elisaeth's vocal range.

I really want to wait until I've seen the show at least one more time to get a better impression of her to get an opinion one way or another.

Kiriyan
I really wish I could say I was blown away by Kiriyan. I really wish I could. Granted, Franz Joseph isn't the most appealing character ever. Kiriyan sang well, but at times it felt like she was kinda just going through the motions, partially because the role is so much like other roles that she's played a million times over.

Actually, I kept getting flashes of her Sir John from "Me and My Girl" because her acting, the way she carried herself, her mannerisms were SO similar to when she played him.

Kiriyan also gets the prize for the "OMG, TAKARAZUKA, WHY!?!??!" of the show for her costume at the beginning of the finale. It's proof that sometimes you can just do TOO much. ^^; She just has so much... stuff.... draped and hangin from her. Lace fabric from her shoulders, random rhinestone and jewelery bits here and there. It was kinda like she tripped and fell into an accessory rack ^^; (And honestly, Masaki's parade outfit is similarly unfortunate).

Masaki
Kinda like Kacha, I need to see her again to get a good impression of her. I'm glad she didn't try to go Kimu crazy with it. Her singing was good. Of all the Lucheni's, hers is most like Asako's, I think (which honestly makes sense).

I'll probably write more later. I just need another viewing to get a better impression.

Mirio (Rudolf)
I was pleasantly surprised with her. Mirio is growing up QUITE well and her singing and acting continue to improve. Again, I keep getting flashes of Komu when I see her perform.

In "Yami ga Hirogaru," she and Asako harmonized soooo well. Their voices fit wondefully. But I was impressed by Mirio's acting during the scene. Her expressions and body motions .... everything. She played the tortured part SO well - shifting eyes, wary looks, small starts, subtle shaking.... And the sort of "I'm going slightly crazy" paranoia were wonderful. (Komu was always one of my favorite Rudolf's for the "going crazy" reason)

Ai-chan
WONDERFUL. Seriously, her Sophie was strong, commanding and viscious when appropriate. Her acting was perfect for the role and her "evil, angry" faces were spot on for the character. Same with the way she would cock her eyebrow. Her performance shows exactly how much she's grown since her shinko years - and also how much she has improved as a singer. She was much better suited to Sophie's lower singing range than the typical musumeyaku forced soprano. Still, when next to Kiriyan, she still comes off a bit young.

Magee thoughts (because you know I have to)
Additional non-Schwarzenberg/ghost Schwarzenberg scenes:
Act I Scene 14: (The "We're all just chillin' in a cafe" scene)
Cafe Man 7 (She's the one who sings/says "Koutaishi no na wa Rudolf!" Yay bonus lines!). I'm likely going to be watching her background antics every day. She was having coffee with Yurino and then joined in on Atsuki Renka's card game XD

Act I Scene 16: (the "OMG WHERE'S ALL THE Milk" scene)
One of the million townspeople in the scene. She has a pail. And, again, Magee with her very distinctive yell that manages to cut through everything. She has the loudest, most identifiable yell in the troupe, I swear.

Act II Scene 1B: (the "<strike>Buddha Pesto</strike> Budapest, Hungary" scene)
Kage Chorus. Yes, I can actually hear her voice in all the kage chorus parts. I'm not sure if it's actually because she's that noticeable or if it's just because I've become so attuned to her voice.

Act II Scene 9: (the "Rudolf just wants to play with his revolutionary friends, geez" scene)
Kage Chorus

Act II Scene 11: (Rudolf gets deaded with a little bonus kissing as a perk scene)
Kage Chorus (I DEFINITELY could hear her in this one. Even though she's just singing "Ahhhhhhhh.")

Basically, most scenes that she's not on stage for as Schwarzenberg, cafe man or townsperson, she's in the kage chorus

Parade Order
Etoile: Sunao
↓
Magee, Shizuku, Sonoka
↓
Ruu-chan, Ahi, Morie (today's revolutionaries)
↓
Mirio (today's Rudolf)
↓
Masaki
↓
Kiriyan
↓
Kacha
↓
Asako

I'm happily surprised that Magee was in parade order. I'd honestly expected her to come down in gakunen order on the sides (like they had Ai-chan do ;;)

Goof Ups
In the Parade, after taking her bow, Mirio was walking towards the side of the stage. While this is going on, others are obviously coming down the side to take their bows. Mirio almost walked RIGHT INTO  Sawaki Rizu (Madame Wolf), who was coming down the left side of the stage. She kinda bumped arms with her even ^^;;;;

In the scene where Rudolf is going to kill himself, as Asako went to take the gun out of her jacket, her ring kinda slipped off. I saw her palm it quickly as she took out the gun. After she handed the gun to Mirio, she moves her hand behind Mirio's back. This gave her the chance to slip the ring back on.

Mind you, these are my thoughts after seeing the show once (and only the 3rd show performed, at that). It's hard to take everything in on the first time through (particuarly as I was distracted by seeing my girl on the stage for the first time in ...errr...four months_) and my opinions may possibly change

I tend to recognize a LOT of the music in Takarazuka shows. The obvious things are... well... obvious. Sometimes I know some of the more obscure things, too. Having just recently downloaded a bunch of things by Muse, I realized that one of the songs in the Arabia section of Fancy Dance is the song "Micro Cuts." (The other two songs in that scene, btw, are "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin and "White Queen" by Queen).

Out of curiosity, I went looking around because I KNEW that I knew the opening song to Zorro (which, incidentally, is really cool and intense). Having worked in a music store for years, I've heard LOTS of music of a million types. I recognized the style so I wandered around a bit.... and stumbled upong a surprise or two

This is the song in the opening of Zorro
Rodrigo y Gabriela - Diablo Rojo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KBgg-hrtyo

Familiar, mizukusa? ^_~

And the related links led me to... a cover of "Stairway to Heaven" by the same group
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJR6Fsu2hZg
That, my dear friends list, is your musumeyaku dance / pair dace *_*

Because they use recorded music during these two parts, rather than the orchestra, should the audio be  cut for the recording, it shouldn't be incredibly difficult to splice back in ^^;

I.... I .... I can't even describe how absolutely amazing The Concert was. So much so that I WISH I could have afforded to see it twice.

I don't even know if I can write up a coherent description yet. It. I. Yes. Particularly "Ai to Shi no Rondo" was Amazing. Zunko as Death, with her band of kurotenshi, led by Wataru. And Wataru.... gah... I.. um....I don't even know how to describe it. Wataru in a pair of the tighetest leather pants you can imagine, black knee-high boots. A fishnet top with a cross across the front, designed to cover the ....errr.... essential bits (though I'm guessing she had something flesh-colored under the mesh top). Either way, not complaining. Her short back hair, slicked back. All in all, very masculine looking.

When I saw her come out, I thrust the opera glasses at mizukusa so that she could see who it was, because at first glance you would think she was one of the male backup dancers who made up the rest of the kurotenshi.

But... but...when.... during the second to last verse of the song, she laid down on the stage in front of Zunko, making certain motions... I ... um... *dies*

Perhaps I should ATTEMPT to start at the beginning, rather than the middle of the second act. I honestly haven't got the energy at the moment to do a full summary... but...

The entire first act was a sort of play-told-via song, in this case, Romeo and Juliet. Zunko and Wataru were abstract "emotion dancers," representing Love, Anger, Lust, Passion, etc. The others played the principal cast members of the "play". The act featured songs from 1996 Baz Luhrman movie version, the Prokofiev ballet, the musical "Romeo & Julia," West Side Story and an AMAZING rendition of "El Tango de Roxanne" from Moulin Rouge.

I was completely and absolutely blown away.

And this was only the first act.

Will HAVE to write more about the second act either later or tomorrow. Because... WOW. And I got my dream fulfilled of hearing Zunko sing "Yami ga Hirogaru." (Which, incidentally, is AMAZING when sung by two Deaths and two Rudolfs in various languages *_____*)

Okay.... I'll give you the second act set list, just to tide you over. I'll let you guess who sang what XD

"My Sharona" by The Knack
"Kids" by Robbie Williams
"Like a Virgin" by Madonna
"You're the One that I Want" from Grease
"I'm a Live" (Original song by ...
I'm exhausted and not feeling much up to writing a huge post, but here are the basics.

* Saw Kaze no Nishiki-e / Zorro today, thanks to the amazing kindness of mizukusa. And I adored it!

* Kimu.... Such an amazing actress  <3 <3 <3

* Yumiko yumiko Yumiko Yumiko. Yumiko. Yumiko. Delicioiusly evil Yumiko.

* First time seeing Mieko-sama live. (note amusement how sometmes you change how you refer to a person in certain company. With club people, she's always "Matsumoto-sensei"). It was an amazing experience. There is a purpose with every move she makes. And her hands. Oh, her hands

* DEFINITELY loved Tom so much more here than when I last saw her live (Reimei no Kaze / Passion), but I think that's just because Reimei was kinda.... errr.....

* During the finale, in the Tonami + Musumeyaku scene... which then turns into the Tonami + Mizu pair dance, I sat for a moment thinking "This music sounds REALLY familiar." I listened a bit more. It was kinda spanishy-guitary..... but my mind was telling me that I knew it in a different style.

The more I listened past all of the elaborate embellishments , I got to the point where I could hum along.

It dawned on me that it was a fancy spanish guitar-like version of..... *dies* Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." It was so emellished upon that it was almost not recognizable as the song.

It goes on for pretty much the whole length of the original song. The slow, softer part in the beginning is the Tonami + Musumeyaku bit. The faster, harder bit towards the end is the intense part of the pair dance.

I am so amused.

Lets pray that they don't cut the audio for this from the DVD
